This way of using Win 7 drivers on Win 10 may not apply in many circumstances, I don’t know because I only know about what I’ve had to do, but it may prove useful. There are 2 main issues. The first is bypassing driver signing, which you should only do if the driver is completely trustworthy. The second is (if available) making use of a Win 7 machine as part of the installation on Win 10.

Having bought a brand new Lumens camera a few years ago and found it very suitable to my needs, I recently bought a second-hand Lumens DC160 document camera.

It is supposed to talk to the Ladibug software you can download from the Lumens website, but the trick with the DC160 is that it requires the older software that only works on Windows 7 and older … bugger.

First, before trying to get it to work on Win 10, let’s make sure we can get it to work on the OS for which it is designed. So; this is how to get it to work on Windows 7 (on a real computer, not a virtual machine):

In answer — very prompt answer, thanks and thumbs-up — to a support ticket I lodged on the Lumens website (good support for a very old camera), I was told by a friendly person to download version 1 of the Ladibug software: http://www.lumens.com.tw/en/Download2/75/
Make sure to download the installer ‘With Visual Presenter Driver‘? This is the key — the camera calls itself a visual presenter, so you need the version that includes the driver(s). File name: Ladibug_PC_1.1.2_and_V1_7.0.0_and_V2_7.1.0_Setup_msi.zip
First, removed any installed Ladibug versions from the laptop.
Made sure camera was not plugged in to the computer.
Ran the msi installer from an Admin CMD prompt
1. searched for CMD in the search box in the start menu
2. right-clicked on it and chose ‘Run as administrator’
3. ran the installer from the command line (that is, changed directory [cd command] to its location and typed its name, including ‘.msi’) — this gives it the correct permissions.
It asked me if I wanted to install a driver! OK! Good; different from my previous attempts that I’ll not bore you with here.
Installer sat there for a very long time. I just waited it out.
Eventually it was done and I restarted, because it said to.
Plugged the camera into the power socket and turned it on, and waited for computer to restart and give me the desktop.
Plugged the USB cord into the camera and the computer.
Computer said: “Installing device driver software.” Hmm… “Searching Windows update” … hmm … after some random time later (I went and did some gardening), it said all was well!
Started the Ladibug software, held breath. Does it see the camera?
Clicked ‘Display live images’ (one of the icons in the Ladibug software).
… … … … … held breath … … … … …
It worked!
In Device Manager, it appears as Visual Presenter V1 and Visual Presenter Memory — but it is there!

OK, so that’s on Windows 7. Can we use it on anything more modern?

Nope, it is an unknown device. Closed down but did not uninstall the software.
OK, copied everything I could find from the Win 7 computer that might relate to the installation to a USB stick — files from c:windows, c:windowsinf, c:windowssystem32, c:program files(x86) and so on. Every file that had a time stamp around that of the successful install.
With the camera plugged in (otherwise it does not show up in Device manager), used Device Manager on the Win 10 box to update the driver of every ‘unknown device’, and used the dialogues that popped up to tell Windows to look for files on the USB stick. Seemed to succeed…
Launched Ladibug 1.1.2.
It worked! I can record movies etc.

A few notes: If you get an error message — ‘third-party INF does not contain digital signature information’, you might need to temporarily disable checking. https://www.urtech.ca/2016/01/solved-the-third-party-inf-does-not-contain-digital-signature-information/

It’s possible that if you disable signature checking, you might be able to just run the installer and not have to bugger around with Device Manager. I can’t say because I did what I did as outlined above. But it may be that some driver installers ‘don’t work’ on Windows 10 just because the driver signing is not valid. If you know for sure that the driver is trustworthy, you might be able to use a Win 7 driver on Win 10 just by temporarily disabling the signing checking. One of the great strengths of Windows has, in my opinion, been its stability. Old programs still work. This is not so much the case with Win 8/8.1/10 as with earlier versions, but backwards compatibility still seems a hell of a lot better than Mac.

Like several other older Lumens models, the DC160 includes an RCA component video output, like those circular yellow ones you find on the back of AV equipment.

I am going to explore using a cheap component-video-to-USB converter. (Must make sure to get one with some logic, not just an RCA cable connected to USB pins.) This would be simpler than these driver acrobatics if I need to get it to work on some other machine, or a colleague wants to use it. I only want to see the camera image in a window on my desktop, after all, and don’t really need the software. Kind of curious about the time lapse photography option, though…
